LifeArt Monday: Knowing the Difference with April Koester
Finding wisdom in when to hold on, when to let go, and when to simply rest
In our busy lives, we're constantly making quiet choices: keep thinking about this or set it down? Push through or take a break? Plan ahead or stay present? Mindfulness offers a skill that helps with all of these: discernment, the ability to see clearly what serves us and what doesn't. Before his awakening, the Buddha practiced by sorting his thoughts into two kinds: those that led toward clarity, kindness, and ease, and those that led toward confusion and harm. He learned to notice where each thought was taking him. And he noticed something else, too. Even good thoughts, thought for too long, wear us out:
"Whatever a person frequently thinks about and considers
becomes their heart's inclination.
Thinking and considering for too long would tire my body.
And when the body is tired, the mind is stressed.
So I stilled, settled, unified, and immersed my mind internally.
Why is that? So that my mind would not be stressed."
— from the Dvedhāvitakka Sutta, "Two Kinds of Thought" (MN 19), adapted from the translation by Bhikkhu Sujato
On Monday, April will explore how we can bring this same gentle attention to everyday life.
